H.M.S. Detroit is what it is because of volunteers. Your volunteer contribution makes a difference! Whether you are able to help with the major events or you have the time to assist on a regular basis, a rewarding and invaluable experience awaits you.
Many of our paid positions have from time to time come from our volunteer core. Future shipboard positions will certainly be considered.

- Become a member of the "Friends of Historic Gordon House", headquarters of H.M.S. Detroit
- Phase II, below deck (plumbing, electrical etc.)
- Phase III, above deck, the rigging (woodworking, painting etc.)
The volunteer duties will provide an opportunity for individuals processing the necessary skills to participate in the actual construction of Canada's Flag Ship, H.M.S. Detroit.
A crew position spanning one month or longer during the sailing season. These volunteer positions include food and lodging on board H.M.S. Detroit. Interns will become active members of the crew. On the job, training in all aspects of the programs will be provided. You will gain valuable experiences in sailing and vessel operation. Specific duties will include cleaning and maintenance of the ship, assisting in the galley and more! The full scope!
You can volunteer to be a ship tour guide for Tall Ship Festivals & Events. You can also volunteer to participate in the Historic/Cultural Programs; you will appear in period costume to present the ship or play a role in the re-enactment of the Battle of Lake Erie and more!

A criminal background check may be requested for volunteer applicants and references will be contacted.
